After Apalis redesigned their website, they reached out to Slam for help to design the user experience and design system for two applications: their web-based internal app for brokers and their new farmer-facing iOS/Android app. Slam simplified the user journey, making it easier for users to navigate while creating a design system to effectively communicate important information and insights.

How can we make insights and data approachable to the complex agriculture system?

One of the main challenges in the agriculture sector is ensuring that farmers, who may not be accustomed to using a lot of tech, can easily digest and apply data to make informed decisions. Our goal is to create both a front and back-facing user experience that simplifies the data and insights for both farmers and brokers, making it easy for them to apply this information to their work. By providing clear, concise, and easily accessible insights, we can help farmers make informed decisions without overwhelming them with technical details.

The Journey

Redefining the user journey

Slam conducted thorough UX research and user interviews to identify the pain points and challenges faced by both farmers and brokers. The team then redefined the user journey, implementing different permission levels tailored to account access and introducing new features like Insights & History tabs. This approach ensured that both brokers and growers had a tailored experience that met their specific needs.

Through the research phase, it became evident that brokers needed a way to quickly access and interpret both historical and real-time data to make informed decisions that would benefit growers. This crucial insight shaped the design and functionality of the new user experience, ensuring it was both user-centric and data-driven.

Transforming the look and feel

Before partnering with Slam, Apalis' app had a minimalistic UX, relying heavily on pre-existing screens and components from development frameworks. Users struggled with navigating the app and accessing the necessary data to make informed decisions.

Building a cohesive design system

We took the Apalis brand to new heights, expanding its basic brand identity into a branding that stands out, while keeping users engaged without overwhelming them. This design brand system empowered them with valuable insights, aiding them in making informed decisions about marketing their crops and optimizing yields.

Developing a clear user journey and creating new interactions

After identifying the challenges users were facing, Slam implemented different permission levels tailored to account access and added new features such as Insights & History tabs. The result was a cohesive interface that resonated with both brokers and growers, simplifying their interactions and enhancing their experience.

Easy to consume insights for informed decision-making

Slam designed a new timeline and activity dashboard that allowed brokers to see an at-a-glance history of the account. This included viewing past decisions, understanding market impacts on profits, tracking interactions and internal notes, and accessing chat input from the mobile app. These features enabled brokers to act quickly, get the insights they needed, and make informed decisions to help growers maximize their crop yields.
