Apalis: Building a Design System and a User Journey for Agriculture Professionals

Apalis provides risk management insurance, insights, and software to farmers. By empowering them with data, farmers can make informed decisions on how to best maximize yields, regardless of the market or environment.

How can we make insights and data approachable to the complex agriculture system?

Creating both a front and back facing user experience to help farmers and brokers work together better.

Apalis works with growers, helping them make smart decisions about marketing their crops. They collaborate with brokers to access data that empowers the growers to choose the best ways to sell their crops, decide what to grow, and increase yields even during uncertain times.

The Project

After Apalis redesigned their website, they reached out to Slam for help to design the user experience and design system for two applications: their web-based internal app for brokers and their new farmer-facing iOS/Android app. Slam simplified the user journey, making it easier for users to navigate while creating a design system to effectively communicate important information and insights.

Building a cohesive design system

We took the Apalis brand to new heights, expanding its basic brand identity into a branding that stands out, while keeping users engaged without overwhelming them. This design brand system empowered growers with valuable insights, aiding them in making informed decisions about marketing their crops and optimizing yields.

Working with the Apalis team allowed us to design and ideate together and develop an in-app experience collaboratively. We took their product offering, which included a lot of industry-specific complexity, and together turned it into an app that worked easily for all of the different users. The most rewarding part of this project was hearing from brokers themselves on how this new app would transform the way they work on a daily basis.

Developing a clear user journey and creating new interactions

Before partnering with Slam, Apalis' app had a minimalistic UX, relying heavily on pre-existing screens and components from development frameworks. We went in and identified issues users were facing. To resolve these blocks, we implemented different permission levels tailored to account access, and added new features (Insights & History tabs). The final result? We designed a cohesive interface that resonated with both brokers and growers.

Easy to consume insights for informed decision-making

We designed a new timeline and activity dashboard so that brokers can see an at a glance history of the account. This includes seeing decisions that were made, how the market impacts profits, a history of interactions and internal notes, and chat input from the mobile app. This allows the brokers to act quickly, get the insights they need, and make informed decisions to help growers get the most yield from their crops.
